ALOE VERA

Aloe barbadensis

 

Aloe Vera is used externally to rebalance dryness, normalize oil production, alleviate inflammation and help regenerate new skin cells. 

Aloe Vera’s bio-chemical makeup include; natural plant sterols, organic acids, more than 20 minerals and vitamins, amino acids and the necessary enzymes all contributing to its powerful skin healing properties.  Aloe Vera’s main therapeutic actions such as antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and being an emollient, it has the ability to form a protective layer on the skin. 

These properties are soothing and calming to any sensitive, dry flaky, itchy, irritated and inflamed skin.

 

 

AUSTRALIAN BLUE CYPRESS (Australian Native)

Callitris intratropica

 

Australian Blue Cypress is well known for its anti-inflammatory properties and therefore can be useful to relieve the irritation from sand-fly, mosquito, and other insect bites.  It is also antibacterial and contribute to the fast healing of small abrasions, cuts and scraped skin.

 

Australian Blue Cypress essential oil has a smoky, herbaceous aroma, with a grounding and stabilizing effect.

 

CEDARWOOD 

Juniperus virginiana

 

Cedarwood essential oil can promote hair growth by stimulating blood flow and circulation in the skin.  It benefits the skin by its sedating ability and therefore is useful for insect bites, small cuts and skin conditions caused by saddle and/or blanket rub.  Cedarwood has insect repellent properties.

 

The soft woody aromatic scent of Cedarwood essential oil encourages the release of serotonin, to relieve tension and stress that affects your horse’s overall well-being.

 

CEHAMI (Australian Native)

Centipeda Cunninghamii

 

Cehami is a botanical extract from an Australian flower a member of the daisy family that is indigenous to the Australian Outback.  It is being used for centuries by the Australian Aborigines as a remedy for skin problems and other ailments.

Extensive medical research confirmed Cehami plant extract to be one of the most effective anti-inflammatories, antimicrobial and skin cell regeneration accelerants that nature can offer.

Cehami is an analgesic, that means its anti-pain and anti-itch properties gives almost instant relief associated with most skin conditions.  It is also a powerful humectant that provides the skin cells with moisture and at the same time seal the cell to prevent moisture loss.

 

CHAMOMILE, GERMAN 

Anthemis nobilis

 

German Chamomile essential oil is a natural anti-inflammatory, anti-allergen and is nourishing to all skin types.  It's Biochemical make-up increase skin cell regeneration, that makes it perfect for use on horses’ skin to speed up healing of small cuts and abrasions.

 

German Chamomile has a strong herbaceous, medicinal aroma with a fresh fruity undertone.  It is used to promote peace and patience in a nervous horse.

 

CLOVE  

Syzybium aromaticum

 

Because of its high antioxidant count and eugenol levels, Clove is known as the ultimate “protective” oil.  

Its biochemical makeup consists of properties such as antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and is the oil with the highest ORAC reading; meaning the oil with the highest Antioxidant level. Antioxidants are molecules that reverse the damage that free radicals cause, the damage can including cell death and cancer.

According to an article in a journal of the Antimicrobial Chemotherapy from 2004, Clove essential oil killed more than 60 types of bacterial strains, 15 strains of fungi plus several viruses.

 

Clove oil has a warm, strong, spicy smell that can have a stimulating effect on the mind and help remove mental exhaustion.

 

COCONUT 

Cocos nucifera

 

Coconut oil contains fatty acids that have a strong antibacterial and antifungal properties.  It is also known for its skin and hair protection, against the sun’s harmful rays.  Coconut oil is a powerful moisturizer and naturally rich in Vitamin E, that is essential for healthy skin & hair growth and repair.

 

FRANKINCENSE 

Boswellia carteri

 

Frankincense is known as the “King of Oils”.  It is a powerful astringent, anti-infectious, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and with sedative properties.   Frankincense can be used to promote skin cell regeneration, blood flow, and circulation. It can assist with wound healing and it decreases the appearance of scars. 

 

Frankincense essential oil has an earthy, uplifting aroma that’s perfect for grounding, centering and can improve concentration and focus. 

 

GERANIUM 

Pelargonium graveolens

 

Geranium essential oil is excellent for treating a variety of skin disorders, including rashes and fungal infections, it is also known to balance the natural oil secretion of sebum in the skin. Because Geranium oil has powerful cicatrisant properties, it increases blood circulation right below the surface of the skin — this helps with restoring the skin and reduce or prevent the appearance of scars. 

This oil is often used in Equine Aromatherapy for hormone balancing, Queensland itch and other skin conditions such as rain scald and mud fever.

 

With its musky rose scent of Geranium essential oil can leave your horse feeling, balanced and calm while boosting his natural energy.

 

JOJOBA 

Simmondsia Chinensis

 

Jojoba is a golden liquid wax (called jojoba oil) it naturally contains a balance of vitamins A, D and E which are known as skin healing vitamins.  It’s Essential fatty acids; Omega 6 and 9 can help regenerate skin cells and repair damaged skin tissue.  Jojoba oil is able to penetrate the skin and fills the gaps between skin cells, this action dramatically improves skin hydration that soothes, moisturize and protect your horse's skin.

Jojoba oil is a lightweight moisturizer and has a protective effect on dry or damaged hair from environmental harm.  Jojoba oil will leave your horses coat looking refreshed and with a natural shine.

 

KANGAROO APPLE (Australian Native)

Solanum aviculare

 

Kangaroo Apple is a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, it was used in Australian Bush Medicine as a poultice on swollen joints.  The plant contains Phenolic Acid that contributes to its protection against UVA and UV induced damage.  Kangaroo Apple builds up a protective film on the skin and coat, it lends a feel of smooth skin and prevents mane and tail from getting tangled.

 

KUNZEA (Australian Native)

Kunzea ambigua

 

Kunzea contains six sesquiterpene compounds, which have powerful anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties.  It has positive results in the treatment of skin irritations and itching associated with insect bites and stings. It has been found to temporarily relieve pain from soft tissue injuries, muscular aches and pain together with pain from arthritis.  Kunzea has insect repellent properties.

 

Kunzea essential oil has is very pleasant aroma, it is often compared to as ‘a smell of the Australian bush’.  It is often used for lifting nervous tension, stress and mild anxiety.

 

LAVENDER 

Lavandula officinalis

 

Lavender oil is an invaluable first aid remedy and can be used to treat various skin conditions.  It includes therapeutic properties such as anti-septic, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and analgesic, that contributes to Lavenders wide range of skin healing properties.   It can be used to relieve pain and discomfort from insect bites, small wounds, cuts and sunburn.  It is also known to assist in the fading of scars.  

 

Lavender Essential oil’s refreshing aromatic scent has a balancing effect that helps ease feelings of tension to promote a calm and relaxed mind.

 
LEMON ASPEN (Australian Native)

Acronychia acidula

 

An Australian rainforest fruit often called Rainforest Lemon.  Wild harvested in the rainforest of Queensland and northern New South Wales, Australia.  Sunlight on hair causes photo-degradation which in turn causes tryptophan degradation in the hair follicles.  This can be prevented with the addition of natural Tryptophan formulated into coat care products.  It also adds a feeling of smoothness to the skin and hair.  Lemon Aspen is highly anti-inflammatory, and a powerful antioxidant and with wound healing properties.

 

LEMON GRASS

Cymbopogon  citratus

 

Lemongrass essential oil is known to have powerful actions such as antifungal, insecticidal, antiseptic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.  Because of its high contents of citral and geraniol compounds, lemongrass oil is known to repel insects such as mosquitoes and midges.

Lemongrass essential oil is a source of essential vitamins such as vitamin A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, folate and vitamin C. It also provides your horse's body and skin with minerals such as magnesium, phosphorous, manganese, copper, potassium, calcium, zinc and iron.

Lemongrass oils benefits, also include pain and ache relief. The oil helps to improve blood circulation, and can, therefore, relieve muscle spasms, backaches and promote tendon and joint health.

 

Lemongrass essential oil has a light and fresh lemony smell with earthy undertones.  It is stimulating, balancing, uplifting and said to be the oil of energetic cleansing.

 

NETTLE LEAF 

Urtica Dioica

 

Stinging nettle is a useful herbal remedy and is considered one of natures' best nutraceuticals because it contains protein, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, beta-carotene, and vitamins A, C, D, and B complex.

Nettle Leaf oil contains biologically active compounds that reduce inflammation, which may be responsible for its many healing properties.  It also stimulates healthy hair growth, clear up skin redness and irritation and balance oil production on the skin and coat.

 

The aroma of stinging nettle leaf is fresh-cleansing and sweet. Stinging nettle leaf absolute is of considerable therapeutic value, uplifting on the senses.

 

OREGANO 

Origanum vulgare

 

The health benefits of Oregano Essential Oil can be attributed to its properties as an antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, digestive, emmenagogue and anti-allergenic substance. 

Oregano essential oil contains two powerful compounds of carvacrol and thymol that have powerful antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. The disinfectant and antibacterial properties were first recognized in ancient Greece where they were often used for treating bacterial infections on the skin or in wounds, and it was also employed to protect food from bacteria.

In a recent medical research, the results showed that the tested Oregano essential oil was active against all of the clinical strains from both genus of bacteria used.  Essential oil from Origanum heracleoticum L. inhibited the growth of Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

 

Oregano oil has a powerful, spicy, camphor-like aroma with a grounding effect on the mind.

 

 
PALMA ROSA 

Cymbopogon martini

 

Palma Rosa is one of nature’s star upholders when it comes to skin health.  It has the ability to regulate skin moisture and oil production and is therefore beneficial to all dry and irritated skin. Together with its antibacterial properties, it can assist in preventing inflammation and promote cell regeneration in the skin that aids in the healing of cuts and small abrasions.

 

Palma Rosa essential oil has a sweet floral, with a hint of rose smell.  It is calming and has an uplifting effect and is often seen as a tonic for the mind and soul.  It is also used to provide emotional comfort and support during a mare’s hormonal cycles.

 

ROSALINA (Australian Native)

Melaleuca ericifolia

 

A relatively new Australian essential oil, Rosalina essential oil or sometimes refer to as Lavender Tea Tree is similar to Lavender but strikingly fresher. Renown international aromatherapist, Dr. Daniel Peneol rates Rosalina essential oil as one of Australia’s finest gifts to the aromatic world.

Rosalina is known for its anti-bacterial, immune-stimulant, antiviral, sedative, decongestant properties.

 

Rosalina combines the best of both worlds, offering intense healing power with a fragrance that’s refreshingly pleasant and mild, almost like lavender with a touch of “forest”. Rosalina contains a high level of linalool, this calming botanical compound is responsible for giving Rosalina essential oil its relaxing effect on the mind in any stressful situation.

 

ROSEMARY 

Rosmarinus officinalis

 

Rosemary has become a popular ingredient in many skin and hair care products due to its antiseptic properties.  Rosemary also has the ability to increase microcirculation of the skins top layer, which promotes healing, prevents hair loss and increase in hair re-growth.

It is also well-known for its properties as an insect repellent, balance hormones, antiseptic, relieve muscle pain and spasms.

 

Rosemary essential oil has a complex, woodsy aroma and is traditionally known for its aromatic use to improve memory, concentration and to help your horse focus.

 

SWEET ORANGE 

Citrus sinensis    

 

According to PubMed, the essential oils of sweet orange were tested for antibacterial activity against 22 bacteria, by using the disc diffusion method. Sweet orange essential oil was effective against all 22 bacterial strains. 

The health benefits of orange essential oil can be attributed to its properties as an anti-inflammatory, antidepressant, antispasmodic, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, carminative, diuretic, tonic, sedative and cholagogue substance.

 

Orange is well known for its uplifting aroma that brings peace and happiness to the mind and joy to the heart.

 

TEA TREE (Australian Native)

Melaleuca alternifolia

 

Tea tree essential oil is a potent healer, especially when 100% pure tea tree oil is used. Keep in mind that many essential oils, extracts and other versions of tea tree oil on the market have potentially toxic extenders. (Labeling laws allow manufacturers to use up to 50% chemical extenders and still say they are 100% pure.)

Australian aboriginals have known the secret to skin hygiene for centuries. They boiled the leaves of the tea tree to make an extract and antiseptic poultices to treat cuts, wounds, and many skin irritations and infections.

Tea Tree’s biochemical makeup is known for its powerful Anti-microbial, Anti-bacterial, Anti-fungal, Antiseptic, Anti-inflammatory and Insecticide actions.

It's been documented in numerous medical studies to effectively kill many strains of bacteria, viruses and fungi including Staphylococcus aureus and Clostridium perfringens the main pathogens responsible for hoof conditions such as Seedy Toe, White Line Disease and Thrush.

 

THYME 

Thymus vulgaris

 

Thyme was used in ancient times, by the Egyptians for embalming, and by the Greeks to help protect against bacterial and fungal infections. 

The health benefits of thyme essential oil can be attributed to its properties as an antispasmodic, antirheumatic, antiseptic, bactericidal, cicatrisant, insecticide, tonic, hormone-balancing and vermifuge substance.

It can be effectively used to keep away parasites that feed on the equine body like mosquitoes, fleas, lice, and flies.  It's vermifuge actions kill worms.

Thyme essential oil has progesterone balancing effects; it benefits the body by improving progesterone production.

The warm effect of this oil can assist with poor circulation just under the skin and to promote cell regeneration.  It is also used to temporarily relieve the pain from arthritis, muscular aches, sprains and soft tissue damage.

 

Thyme essential oil’s fresh, herbaceous aroma is said to uplift the body and mind especially from fatigue or when recovering from illness.

 

VIOLET LEAF

You might be familiar with this beautiful little flower; keen gardeners among us will no doubt appreciate its beauty and its range of splendid color.

Violet leaf oils properties include mild analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, diuretic, expectorant, laxative, and stimulant actions and with pain-relieving potential.

Violet leaf essential oil can be used with great effect on the body to deal with conditions caused by inflammation. Violet essential oil has anti-inflammatory compounds and many horses suffering from arthritis, joint and muscle pain have found it to be an effective pain relief.

 

Violet leaf essential oil has a strong, herbaceous and green aromatic scent that is comforting and calming and it is said to be able to ease anxiety and nervous exhaustion.

 

WITCH HAZEL 

Hamamelis virginiana

Witch Hazel is an old favorite and well-known for its high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that aids to bring down the redness, swelling and the stinging and itching sensation of many equine skin disorders including insect bites. 

Witch hazel is also used to reduce oil buildup on your horse’s hair, which will leave the coat shinier and healthier looking.

 

WHEAT-GERM OIL

 

Wheat-germ oil can be readily absorbed by your horses' skin, which makes it an effective moisturizer and an appropriate topical treatment. Wheat-germ oil delivers a healthy infusion of vitamin A, vitamin D, B vitamins, antioxidants and fatty acids. These nutrients not only moisturize and heal dry or cracked skin, they also help prevent scarring. In particular, wheat-germ oil is a rich source of vitamin E, which helps reduce skin damage, stimulate blood flow to speed healing, fight free radicals, support healthy collagen formation and maintain even skin tone.
