What is an Essential oil?

Essential oils are volatile plant molecules, produced as part of the plant's natural survival mechanism. These naturally occurring, volatile aromatic compounds, can be found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers and other parts of some plants species.

Essential oils have long been used by health-care practitioners, from as early as 3000 B.C. and are still being used (by Aromatherapists and Naturopaths) for these oils ability to promote mental, emotional and physical healing, harmony and balance.

Horses and humans can benefit from the healing properties of these amazing plant oils through direct application to the skin, inhalation (smell or breathing) and indigestion.

(Never use essential oils for your horse or yourself without the referral of a qualified Aromatherapist or Equine Aromatherapist)

When an essential oil molecule is inhaled through the nose or mouth, the airborne molecules can interact immediately with the olfactory system (organ part) and the limbic system (emotion part) of the brain.

Understanding this in more depth can help explain why smell often triggers emotions and how essential oils have a profound physiological and psychological effect on the human and equine species.

What is Equine Aromatherapy?

Equine Aromatherapy is the use of pure therapeutic grade essential oils to balance, harmonize and promote the health of body, mind and spirit.

Although Equine Aromatherapy has proved beneficial to some common physical equine ailments such as skin allergies, skin problems, respiratory issues, muscular or joint aches and pains and even hoof hygiene, referring to the term Equine Aromatherapy - it is often first thought of the emotional well-being.

Horses are prey animals and have a strong sense of smell that is directly connected to their limbic system. It is the limbic system, in the brain, which controls a horse's fight or flight response.

The proper use of essential oils in Equine Aromatherapy can, therefore, enhance a horses’ emotional outlook and provide support and emotional balance, during stressful and challenging times.
